Rajeswar was Sonia’s messenger, says Amar
In an embarrassing revelation for the government, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh on Tuesday said Uttar Pradesh governor TV Rajeswar had acted as Sonia Gandhi’s messenger before the trust vote in the Lok Sabha.
The UP governor came to me as Ms Sonia Gandhis emissary. The invitation for a meeting with Ms Gandhi came through the governor, Mr Singh said. The revelation clearly suggests that the Congress leadership has scant regard for preserving the institutional prestige of the constitutional office. The government leadership has been routinely making pious declarations about making Raj Bhawans a source of constitutional statesmanship.
Mr Singhs revelations should further dent the image of the government as it advertises the ways that the ruling side employed for organising the required numbers in the Lok Sabha. Although a parliamentary panel headed by a Congressman whitewashed the case of bribing against leaders in the ruling side, Mr Singhs statement is sure to make the charges levelled by the Opposition more credible.
The BJPs immediately seized upon the statement of the SP general secretary to drive home its point that the Congress had violated every norm for winning the trust vote. The alliance between the Congress and the SP was born out of sin. Mr Amar Singh himself has said that his party would not have supported the Congress had it known that Mulayam Singh would be chargesheeted by the CBI. The two parties have taken the countrys politics to a new low, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said on Tuesday.
The public sparring between the SP and the Congress is certain to intensify in the coming days. And it is certain to bring more discomfort to the Congress, which has been claiming that its association with the SP is purely political.
