Raje in New Delhi to end deadlock

NEW DELHI: Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje arrived here on Sunday night to hold discussions with M Venkaiah Naidu about ways to end the stand-off between her and party president Rajnath Singh.

The BJP president has asked her to step down from the post of the leader of the opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, but the latter has held out so far. She has the backing of 70 of the 79 party legislators in the state, and has demonstrated her clout by repeatededly parading her supporters.

Besides exhibiting her hold within the 79-member legislature group, Ms Raje has also started mustering support among BJPs top brass. Besides meeting Mr Naidu, who has been asked by the party president to break the deadlock, the former Rajasthan chief minister is also expected to meet other senior party leaders during her visit.

While resisting the BJP presidents diktat to step down from the opposition leaders post owning moral responsibility for the partys debacle in the state in the general election, Ms Raje has reaffirmed her loyalty to the party and RSS.

The former Rajasthan chief minister has till now succeeded in thwarting the BJP high commands attempts to dislodge her from the opposition leaders post, but with the party coming under immense pressure from RSS to crack down on indiscipline and usher in a semblance of order within the party at various levels, she may find the going tough in continuing to hold out.

If there is a consensus among the senior leaders about the need to restore the partys authority and credibility, she may have to bow down to their wishes. In such an eventuality, she may be accommodated at the national level by being made a general secretary. She may also be asked to nominate her successor.

The former chief minister had said she would like to go for talks as quickly as possible to sort out the problems. She is being accompanied by her trusted lieutenants such as Rajendra Singh Rathore, Digambar Singh, besides her son Dushyant Singh.
