Rains force R-Day parade to be curtailed for first time

For the first time in its history, the Republic Day Parade here has to be curtailed owing to heavy rains, with the marching contingents of the armed forces, the police and the paramilitary keeping off the parade route.

KOLKATA: For the first time in its history, the Republic Day Parade here has to be curtailed owing to heavy rains, with the marching contingents of the armed forces, the police and the paramilitary keeping off the parade route.

"Owing to the rains, we had to keep away the marching contingents of the armed forces, the paramilitary, police and the fire brigade from the parade. Only their floats and their tableaux participated," a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The showering of petals on the VVIPs and spectators by IAF aircraft also had to be cancelled along with the parade by school children and civilian organisations, he said.

Spectators turned out in lesser numbers to witness the Parade on the Red Road under smart morning showers, even as Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb and top brass from the Armed Forces and the police took their seats under shamianas.

Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi took the salute at the Parade which began on schedule at 9.30 a.m and continued for about 20 minutes.

Deputy GoC of the Bengal Area Brigadier D K Ghosh led the Parade.

Reports from the districts said that the rains marred the R-Day celebrations in many places with organisations putting off their customary 'prabhat pheris.'

In the evening, Governor Gandhi is scheduled to hold a group discussion with a cross section of people on the occasion of Republic Day.
