Rain in Singur affects Tata automobile factory

Tata Motors' plans to roll out the world's cheapest car for 100,000 rupees received a set back as most of the premises of the factory got water logged after incessant rainfall in West Bengal.

SINGUR: Tata Motors' plans to roll out the world's cheapest car for 100,000 rupees received a set back as most of the premises of the factory got water logged after incessant rainfall in West Bengal.

The boundary wall of the factory in Singur was broken at several places with water flowing inside the premises.

The villagers termed the nature's fury a natural justice as the factory was put up against their wishes.

"This factory has seen a lot of protest from the villagers. Now, the nature is taking a revenge on behalf of the villagers," said Doodh Kumar Dhara, a member of the Beraberi village council.

Trucks that supply materials to the factory site were stranded on the highway as water has cut off the factory from the rest of the area.

"Though the work is going inside, but we are not able to take the supply inside as there is water filled up outside the complex due to incessant rains. All the trucks are stranded here as they cannot take in the supplies," said Sagar, a labourer.

Tata Motors started work to build its factory in Singur in 2006 to make what the company says will be the world's cheapest car for 100,000 rupees.

But the project has been mired in trouble with some farmers saying the government took their land against their will.

Last year when the entire site was flooded during the monsoon, the State Government promised to set up a new drainage system. However, the work has yet to be completed.
