Railway employees and contract labourers engaged in railway and highway construction have been evacuated from the trouble-torn North Cachar Hills district following killing of 23 persons during the last week.

ASSAM: Railway employees and contract labourers engaged in railway and highway construction have been evacuated from the trouble-torn North Cachar Hills district following killing of 23 persons during the last week.

North Eastern Frontier Railway spokesman said here today that due to "lack of proper security and increased vulnerability of railway employees and contract labourers, it has been decided to shift them out from the district."

The employees and officials between Lumding and Haflong stations have been evacuated to the divisional headquarters at Lumding while those posted between Haflong and Badarpur have been shifted to Badarpur section in Barak Valley.

Railway authorities had already suspended movement of trains within the district following the killing of railway employees, contractors and others employed in transport companies by Dima Halam Daoga (Black Widow) militants.

Roads leading to the district from Lanka in neighbouring Nagaon district have bee also blocked by helpers and drivers association leading to crisis of essential commodities and price rise.

Meanwhile, a protest rally was held here today by citizens under the aegis of Indigenous Peoples' Forum to protest against the killing of J P Roia (60), the president of Beite Devangpui, an umbrella organisation of various Beite tribe bodies on Friday.
