Fresh crackdown on PFI, NIA conducts pan-India raids, over 50 members detained
Cracking down on the Popular Front of India for its alleged terrorism-related activities and radicalising Muslim youth, the second round of raids were conducted in several states based on inputs from those arrested earlier.

More than 50 people have been detained and arrests are likely after the questioning is done, IANS cited sources as saying.

Raids were going on in Aurangabad, Jalana, Parbhani districts of Maharashtra; Simoga, Bidar, Ballari, Hubli, Kalburgi districts of Karnataka; Nagarbera of Assam; Bulandshahr's Kasba Syana, Sarurpur and Lisari Gate area of Meerut in Western Uttar Pradesh; and at several places in Delhi.


The NIA and the ED had arrested more than 106 members of the PFI earlier in the week.

Here are the updates:
  • 57 members and functionaries of PFI taken into custody after the UP Police ATS, STF and district polices raided residences of members across 26 districts. Documents and evidence recovered from the spot being analyzed and will form basis of the course of action.   • Based on intelligence inputs, we conducted raids and caught over 80 people associated with PFI & SDPI. 20 more people are also being questioned. They have been sent to preventive custody. They were planning to incite communal violence/public disorder: Karnataka ADGP (Law & Order)

  • All India Imams Council state chief Maulana Irfan Daulat Nadvi & PFI member Rashid Shahdain Shaheed Iqbal taken into custody by Nashik Police Crime Branch u/s 151 late last night: Police Inspector Hemant Patil.

  • Police have detained several Popular Front of India (PFI) leaders in urban and rural areas of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts early on Tuesday.

  • 30 people detained in Delhi in connection with crackdown on Popular Front of India (PFI): Police sources.

  • Second round of raids are currently underway against PFI members across eight states. The raids started early Tuesday morning.

  • Assam Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Special Branch) Hiren Nath said five PFI members have been detained from Nagarbera area.

  • Four persons have been taken into custody in Western Uttar Pradesh.

  • In Maharashtra the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and the local police were conducting the raids in Aurangabad, Jalana and Parbhani districts.

  • As of now, the NIA is investigating a total of 19 PFI related cases.
