NEW DELHI: After being discharged from Apollo hospital, police took Rahul Mahajan straight to Tughlak Road police station where a case has been registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act before being produced in a local court.
Earlier, dressed in a white shirt and blue denims, a tired-looking Rahul Mahajan came out of the hospital in a wheel chair shortly after 3 pm. He was flanked by his sister Poonam.
A huge battery of media persons jostled to catch a glimpse of him while Rapid Action Force personnel deployed outside the hospital formed a human chain to keep them at bay.
Delhi Police personnel immediately drove him to the Tughlaq Road Police Station in a Toyota Qualis vehicle.
Police sources said it is only a formality to take an accused to a police station where a case is filed against him and the Information Officer, who registers the case, takes the person to Court.
Meanwhile, the BJP on Tuesday sought to distance itself from the Rahul Mahajan episode saying it was for the police to investigate the matter.
"The police will inquire into the matter. I have no comment to make," BJP President Rajnath Singh told a news conference here.
Rahul was not a BJP member but had expressed the desire to get involved in party work, Singh said in reply to a query but declined comment on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's reported remark on the alleged drug abuse being "a mistake".
The BJP chief also evaded a reply when asked whether the party was closing its doors on late leader Pramod Mahajan's son, and merely replied: "I am not able to hear you.''
On the BJD-BJP government in Orissa, he said it was doing well.
