Rahul Gandhi's growing role in party affairs a natural progression: Congress

NEW DELHI: Congress on Tuesday said Rahul Gandhi's growing role in the party was obvious and in keeping with the sentiments of partymen, but supremo Sonia Gandhi was the ultimate arbiter on leadership issues.

AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters, "There is no suspense about it. He has a role which is increasing constantly. In natural course, his role will go on increasing." He was responding to questions on leadership issue in Congress in the wake of Sonia's illness.

Dwivedi stressed that "Congress president Sonia Gandhi is here to lead the party and she will decide what to do and when".

The senior Congress office-bearer's comments came in the wake of queries about Rahul taking over the leadership mantle. Sonia's continuing recovery from a recently reported illness has coincided with Rahul's growing engagement in organizational affairs.

Party leaders see his presence at the recent meeting of poll-bound Punjab and Uttarakhand leaders with Sonia as a departure from his reluctance to look beyond his AICC mandate of youth outfits.

Dwivedi said Rahul's growing role in organisational affairs was in sync with what Congress workers wanted. "This is what Congressmen want and this is what in their opinion is natural. There is no doubt about it that Congressmen want his role to increase," he said.

According to sources, and as reported by TOI, the Congress heir apparent is set for a bigger role with even a change of leadership in the near future. AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh had told TOI it was time that Rahul took care of "all of us", referring to his restricted charge of frontal outfits of Youth Congress and NSUI.

When asked, Dwivedi refused to speculate on when the change of baton might happen. He said, "You just cannot speculate on timeline. You should consider all other speculation as mere speculation for the time being."

Asked about the possibility of Priyanka Gandhi joining politics, Dwivedi said, "They themselves decide who in the family has to do what and right now Rahul Gandhi is in politics."
