GUWAHATI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited the flood-affected Lakhimpur district in Assam. He assured that the Congress will raise the matter of Assam floods in Parliament and ensure that the victims get compensated.

Rahul travelled in a boat to Amtola. The area had witnessed breach in embankment. Rahul said, “There are floods here. I thought I must come and hear about the pain of the people-.We will raise the matter of Assam flood in Parliament.”

Rahul later went to Silchar to take part in the last rites of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who passed away on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi had visited Assam and announced a Rs 2,000-crore package for the recurring flood problem in four northeastern states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Besides announcing the constitution of a high-level committee to study the problems of flood in the region, Modi had announced Rs 250 crore for Assam.

But Congress had said Rs 2,000 crore is too little for the devastating flood.
