Gandhi stressed that the resignation, prompted by public pressure, a Supreme Court investigation, and a no-confidence motion by Congress, was long overdue. He further attacked the saffron party and it's two leaders saying that despite the violence, loss of life, and the erosion of India's values in the region, PM Modi had allowed Singh to remain in power.
"For nearly two years, BJP's CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur. The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning, ” Gandhi wrote in a post on social media platform X.
He further urged the prime minister to listen to the people of Manipur and outline a clear plan to restore peace and normalcy in the region. Gandhi stressed that healing the wounds of Manipur’s people should be the government's most urgent priority.
"But the most urgent priority is to restore peace in the state, and work to heal the wounds of the people of Manipur. PM Modi must visit Manipur at once, listen to the people and finally explain his plan to bring back normalcy," his post further read.
According to ET reports, the resignation follows reports of political moves in New Delhi, where several BJP leaders, including Singh himself, met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This has raised further speculation about potential changes in the state's leadership, with Congress pressing for swift action to address the ongoing crisis.
