Rahul Gandhi to Kickstart Congress Punjab Campaign from Mann's home turf on November 4
The announcement was made on Monday by Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, who sought to play down the differences among senior leaders and emphasised that the party would fight the elections collectively. The Congress is trying to put up a united front in Punjab after months of internal bickering and factional feuds. The faction-ridden Punjab Congress will fight the elections under Pargat Singh, who has been entrusted with a key leadership role following the recent organisational changes. The reshuffle came against the backdrop of an open power tussle involving former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, which had exposed deep divisions within the state unit.
When asked about Warring's role following his replacement as state Congress president, Venugopal objected to the use of the word "removal". "Ours is a democratic party. We don't quell anyone's opinion. We respect it. There might be differences of opinion but we are all in it together," Venugopal said, seeking to send a message that the organisational changes should not be seen as sidelining any leader.
Congress' Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot also made a pointed attempt to project unity, recounting how the state's senior leaders had travelled together and shared a meal earlier in the day. "Today we ate our food with Partap Singh Bajwa ji. We all went together to break bread. I was driving the car, Pargat Singh ji was there and Channi ji and Warring ji were sitting behind us. This is to tell you that the entire Congress is fighting together," Pilot said.
The carefully articulated message of unity comes at a time when Congress is attempting to put its organisational house in order before taking on AAP. The differences between Warring and Channi, along with competing leadership ambitions within the state unit, have repeatedly threatened to overshadow the party's campaign preparations.
By bringing Rahul Gandhi to Sangrur and publicly showcasing its senior leaders together, the Congress leadership is attempting to shift the political conversation from its internal rivalries to its electoral challenge against the Mann government.
