Rahul Gandhi takes on Mayawati; visits rape murder victim
Rahul Gandhi paid a surprise visit to the family of a 14 year old girl who was raped and then killed by cops inside a police station in Lakhimpur district.

LUCKNOW: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi kept the focus firmly on the detoriating law and order situation in the state and increasing police atrocities, when he decided to pay a surprise visit to the family of a 14 year old girl who was raped and then killed by cops inside a police station in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday.
He met the girls family for 20 minutes in Lakhimpur, taking a detour from his constituency Amethi, and asked about the progress of the investigation into the rape and murder case.
Addressing the media later Rahul Gandhi said that there was little hope for the girls family to receive justice and he supported their demand for a CBI probe into the incident.
On Monday he had visited the family of a girl who was blinded in one eye after a failed attempt in Kannauj on June 19. The girl is undergoing treatment in Delhi where Rahul Gandhi visited his family on Monday.
The 14 year old Lakhimpur girl was raped and then murdered by cops inside the Nighasan police station compound on June 10. In a massive cover up exercise the police initially tried to pass it off as a suicide case but after a huge public outcry over the brazen act of police, a second autopsy was conducted after exhuming her body from the grave. The second autopsy confirmed her murder and 11 police men were suspended by the government under pressure over the widespread cases of crime against women in UP.
On Monday the Congress party had taken out a protest march in Lucknow to highlight the detoriating law and order cases in UP the latest being the murder of a government doctor inside jail. Three doctors have been killed during the last 8 months in relation to the massive corruption in the health and family welfare department.
