Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended his visit in Ladakh for a few days during which he is likely to visit Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh and also visit Kargil where hill council elections are scheduled next month.

Gandhi chaired a meeting of the party members in Leh where it was decided that the visit will be extended for a few more days, mostly likely till August 25.

"He will stay here for a few more days during which he will visit Pangong Lake on Saturday and later visit Kargil as well," Tsering Namgyal, Congress leader in Ladakh told ET.

Gandhi attended a football match in Leh on Friday organized in remembrance of his late father Rajiv Gandhi, whose birth anniversary falls on August 20. He is likely to participate in a brief birth anniversary program of Rajiv Gandhi at the Pangong Lake.

The Congress leader has remained vocal in criticizing the BJP led central government regarding the ongoing faceoff between India and China along the eastern border in Ladakh. "We will brief him on what is happening here," said Namgyal.

This is the first visit of Gandhi to the newly formed union territory since the abrogation of special status of J&K on August 5, 2019, when the erstwhile state of J&K was also downgraded into the two union territories of J&K and Ladakh.
