NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi, who formally resigned as Congress president on Wednesday, would leave for the United States on Friday for his mother Sonia Gandhi’s medical review.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi had been going for medical review periodically to the United States. She is usually accompanied by either her son Rahul or daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “Soniaji has not been keeping well and has to go for a review, which cannot wait,” a senior Congress functionary told ET.

Meanwhile, many party leaders questioned the timing of Rahul Gandhi’s formal statement on resignation on Wednesday. Another Congress leader said: “Many had been left confused by the timing of Rahulji’s resignation. He was only finalising things before he travels abroad for his mother’s treatment. But he did this on Wednesday as he had to appear before a court on Thursday and would be flying off to the US on Friday.”

Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka is already in the US for her husband Robert Vadra’s treatment. Vadra, who is facing allegations of money laundering in purchase of a London property, had been granted special permission in June by a court to travel to the US and Netherlands on health grounds. Congress sources indicated that the Gandhis would join him in the United States.
