Rahul Gandhi in Mandsaur: Congress president to address farmers' rally

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will meet the family members of those killed during the farmers' stir last year in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur.

He will address a rally where he is expected to announce Kisan Samriddhi Sankalp, a plan to improve the plight of farmers in the state if the Congress party comes to power.

All the senior leaders of the Congress party are expected to attend the rally which comes ahead of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections slated to be held later this year.


Madhya Pradesh is reeling under protests by farmers. The situation is particularly bad in the Malwa-Nimad region comprising 15 districts, including Mandsaur, Jitu Patwari, working president of the state Congress said.

The garlic farmers in the state are protesting the sharp plunge in the wholesale prices which have fallen to as low as Re 1 per kg.


"This government is anti-farmer, anti-poor and is also putting the security of the country at risk because of its wrong policies," said Congress leader Mohan Prakash.

Last year, six farmers were killed allegedly in police firing during a protest that had turned violent.

The Congress had raised the issue of farmers distress under the BJP government in Gujarat where it gained electorally and is expecting to do the same in Madhya Pradesh.
