Karnataka chief electoral officer (CEO) on Sunday issued a notice to AICC leader Rahul Gandhi asking him to substantiate his charge that Shakun Rani, a voter in Mahadevapura assembly segment in Bengaluru Central LS seat, had voted twice.

Gandhi, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had alleged that Rani had voted twice, and that was one of the reasons why ECI destroyed the CCTV footage. The CEO, in its notice, referred to the charges he made related to Mahadevapura at a press conference in Delhi on Thursday.

The CEO said Rani has said she has voted only once, and not twice as alleged. ECI’s preliminary enquiry into Gandhi’s complaints has revealed that the tick-marked documents he showed in the presentation was not a document issued by the polling officer.

The CEO requested Gandhi to furnish documents that he relied on to conclude Rani or anyone else voted twice. This would help the ECI’s office take up a detailed investigation.

On Friday, while leading a rally against ECI in Bengaluru, Gandhi had alleged large scale manipulation in Mahadevapura constituency to help the BJP win the seat. There were 6.5 lakh votes in the Mahadevapura, and out of them, 1,00,250 votes were stolen. Meaning- the BJP stole 1 out of every 6 votes. has stolen votes, he had said.
