Rahul Gandhi future leader of Congress: Janardan Dwivedi

NEW DELHI: It is Rahul Gandhi who is the future leader of the party, Congress today said, seeking to dispel the notion that it does not want the 2014 elections look like a contest between him and Narendra Modi.

"It is always clear in Congress who will be its leader after the government is formed. So what is the meaning of discussing it and making an announcement regarding it? It is known to all Congressmen...AICC general Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said after CWC meeting which decided against Rahul being named as the party's PM candidate.

He also said Congress had been maintaining that if there is any other leader in party after Sonia Gandhi, it is Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.

The party has said it on many occasions that Rahul Gandhi is the future leader of Congress. This sentence (of resolution) is in line with that, he said.

Dwivedi also quoted Congress President Sonia Gandhi as saying in the meeting that it is not necessary that the party should make an announcement regarding the PM candidate only because some other party has done this.

He also sought to emphasise that Rahul Gandhi has said in the meeting that he is a dedicated party worker and ready to fulfill any responsibility the party assigns him.
