Rahul Gandhi files RTI for info on UP health department

LUCKNOW: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi made a surprise change in his itinerary, cutting short his Wednesday's engagement in Amethi and driving to Lucknow and the headquarters of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to file an RTI seeking details of spending under the programme.

The Amethi MP gave a much-needed boost to UP Congress which has been pitching for a CBI inquiry into the murder of chief medical officer (family welfare), Dr B P Singh, which has cost two senior UP ministers their jobs. He said he would press for a probe with the state government.

Accompanied by UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Rahul spent half-an-hour at the office "wanting to learn the nitty-gritty of the process to ensure a time-bound reply under RTI" said deputy director general, NRHC, Dr Anil Kumar Mishra.

The two-page application signed by Joshi poses questions which could embarrass the state government, especially after it admitted to largescale irregularity and its possible linkage to successive murders of two CMOs within six months.
