BENGALURU: Former India captain and current A team coach Rahul Dravid will be conferred with an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University at its 52nd annual convocation on January 27.

Bangalore University is the second in Karnataka to confer a doctorate on the batting legend. Gulbarga University, too, had chosen Dravid for a doctorate in 2014.

Born January 11 at Indore, Dravid grew up in Bengaluru and went to St Joseph’s Boys High School. He got a degree from the St Joseph’s College of Commerce. He was studying MBA at the St Joseph’s College of Business Administration when he was selected for the national team. He retired from international cricket in 2012 after a career that spanned a decade and a half.

“Dravid will be the only personality to be conferred with a doctorate this year,” Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor B Thimme Gowda told ET. “We have reached out to his mother about our decision.” Dravid’s mother Pushpa was a professor at the Bangalore University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

Dravid will be second Bengaluru-based cricketer to receive an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University. In 2013, the university conferred a doctorate on former India captain Gundappa Vishwanath.
