JHANSI: With Congress at loggerheads with ruling BSP in Uttar Pradesh, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, took the battle to Chief Minister Mayawati's accusing her government of failing to implement the Centre's welfare schemes and deliver on promises for relief in drought-hit Bundelkhand.
After Chief Minister Mayawati accused the Centre of ignoring the backward area of Bundelkhand, Gandhi termed her administration of being in a "state of collapse" in the area where the situation is "very bad".
"It is a state of collapse and the situation is very bad," said Gandhi without naming Mayawati or her government.
Gandhi, who met families of the farmers who allegedly committed suicide due to farm crisis, alleged the state administration had failed to deliver on its relief promises.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the ongoing Uttar Pradesh government-run schemes in Bundelkhand, Gandhi charged the union government's schemes were not being implemented and managed properly in the area.
On his arrival at the airport here on the first day of his two-day visit to the area, he told newspersons that the state govenment "has neither launched any employment scheme in the region nor was it properly managing the central government's employment guarantee scheme forcing the people to move out to Mumbai and Delhi in search of jobs.
Asked about the financial assistance for the region by the Centre, Gandhi said he was here to personally assess the magnitude of the problem faced by Bundelkhand region and would take it up with the union government.
Efforts would be made to see that schemes for providing relief were chalked out soon, he said.
