Raebareli or Wayanad? Rahul Gandhi keeps voters in suspense

AICC leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday talked about choosing between Raebareli in UP and Wayanad in Kerala but did not provide a clear answer.

“Many people are speculating - Wayanad or Raebareli? Everybody knows the answer to this question except myself, but don’t worry, both Wayanad and Raebareli will be happy with my decision,” Gandhi said, while addressing voters in Wayanad where he visited to thank them for electing him for another term. His visit comes amid intense efforts by sections of senior Congress leaders from Kerala to persuade him to stick to Wayanad seat, which gave him a political rebirth in 2019.

“I commit to you that you will be happy with my decision to further our collective resolve to democratic progress,” Gandhi said, while leaving voters in suspense. Gandhi won Wayanad by a lead of 3.64 lakh votes and Raebareli by a margin of 3.9 lakh votes.


Many Congress leaders, especially those in Wayanad, are not ready to accept that Gandhi may choose to retain Raebareli over Kerala. State Congress leaders think they are answerable to people. Wayanad constituency consists of three assembly segments from Wayanad, three from Malappuram and one from Kozhikode districts.
