AHMEDABAD: Jignesh Mewani, the backward caste assembly candidate backed by the Congress in the Gujarat elections, has been photographed receiving a cheque from members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI), under the NIA radar after many of its members were allegedly found fighting for the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq .

While the amount of money on the cheque is not visible, speaking to Times Now, senior SDPI official Abrar Ahmed said, “We are extending full support to Mewani. We will support any party which fights communal forces.”

With SDPI’s support to Mewani exposed, the onus is now on the Congress to clarify whether it endorses donations from double-dealing organizations under probe for links to terror groups, said political observer.

SDPI general secretary of Karnataka, Abdullah Majeed Sab, met Mewani and handed him the cheques.

Senior Congress officials from Gujarat refused to respond to the issue, with one of them saying the question should be answered by the party high command — a clear indication that no leader wants to question Mewani tie up, as it is the brain child of congress president elect, Rahul Gandhi. The firebrand Dalit banks heavily on Muslim support from Vadgam in Banaskantha.
