R-Day functions amid security and bandh call in Assam

Despite militants of North-East including the banned ULFA calling a boycott of Republic Day celebrations and a "general strike", official programmes took place amid tight security across Assam.

GUWAHATI: Despite militants of North-East including the banned ULFA calling a boycott of Republic Day celebrations and a "general strike", official programmes took place amid tight security across Assam.

Besides R-Day function in Guwahati, the tri-colour was unfurled at all the official functions in the district headquarters with ministers addressing the public.

The "general strike" had no special effect as the day being a national holiday had all offices, educational institutions, markets, shops and banks closed, official sources said.

Private vehicles were off the roads and along the national highways as people either preferred to remain indoors for holiday or to avoid their vehicles being targetted, the sources said.

With trains operating as per the revised schedule because of the strike call to avoid attacks on railway property, the sources said, flights took off and landed as usual.

No untoward incident has been reported so far. With threats of ULFA and HuJI attacking, security was reinforced across the state and the official venues of the R-Day celebrations were sanitised.

Official Republic Day celebration parade grounds were under the surveilance of security forces maintaining 24-hour vigil there, the sources said.

Law enforcement personnel were patrolling highways, bridges, rivers and other vulnerable areas where the insurgents could unleash subversive activities.

Security was intensified around vital installations such as airports, railway stations, oil drilling sites, oil refineries, Doordarshan and All India Radio stations, the sources added.

Militant outfits - ULFA, Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) and Tripura People's Democratic Front (TPDF) - in a solidarity statement called for the boycott and also an 18-hour "general strike" today from 1 am to 6 pm in the region.
