Quota a rakhi gift: Modi to Gujarat BJP women wing

"Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is a gift to the women of the country," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday during his first visit to his home state after both the houses passed the Women Reservation Bill. "Like every year, this year too you had sent me Rakhi in large numbers. I had prepared your gift beforehand, but I could not say this," he told the workers of Gujarat BJP Mahila Morcha, who received him in large numbers on his arrival.

Modi, who reached Ahmedabad on a two-day visit to Gujarat, said that his work for women empowerment had started from Gujarat itself where he had launched projects like Kenya Kelvani for women education, Samras Panchayat where additional money was promised to those panchayats where all elected members were women. He also recounted several other women empowerment measures taken by the state government led by him.

Taking a dig at the opposition, Modi said that the opposition had to support the bill because of the strength of women and they were trying to divide women into various categories but ultimately had to support the bill.


On Wednesday, Modi is scheduled to preside over a programme marking the celebration of 20 years of the 'Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit' at Science City, Ahmedabad.
