NEW DELHI: Former telecom minister A Raja, accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, had a quiet 48th birthday at the Tihar Jail here on Tuesday.

The DMK leader, weighed down by lengthy legal proceedings, wanted to keep his birthday under wraps. He did not tell any of his co-accused or the jail authorities. Even MD of D B Realty, Shahid Balwa, who is lodged in Jail number 1, was in the dark about the ex-minister's birthday till he came to the Patiala House Court.

DMK leader Kanimozhi, also chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the 2G scam, wished Raja in the court. Sources in the Tihar Jail said Raja's family members did not visit him in prison. A jail source said, "There were no birthday celebrations by Raja. He did not inform anyone in the jail, and he was quiet most of the time".

As part of daily regimen, Raja reported for the head count at 6 am, and then had a frugal breakfast. He read newspapers for a while, and then got ready for the court proceedings.

The other co-accused - Sanjay Chandra, Vinod Goenka, R K Chandolia and Sidharth Behura - also had no inkling about his birthday.
