MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin's chosen successor Dmitry Medvedev was on Monday, formally registered as the Presidential candidate of the ruling United Russia party by the Central Election Commission ahead of the country's March 2 polls.

Earlier, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov and firebrand ultra-nationalist leader of Liberal-Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky were also formally registered.

Two independent candidates including former prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov are also seeking registration after submitting the signatures of their two million supporters each.

First Deputy Prime Minister Medvedev, 42, was officially named the presidential candidate of United Russia at the party's Congress in December and his nomination was backed by three other pro-Kremlin parties "A Just Russia", "Agrarian Party" and "Civic Force".

The formal registration as a presidential candidate opens the door for campaigning in the crucial presidential polls. Putin will be vacating his Kremlin office in May after serving two consecutive terms.

Current Kremlin Chief of Staff Sergei Sobyanin will manage Medvedev's campaign.
