Pushkar Singh Dhami to be new CM of Uttarakhand

Khatima MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami will become the new chief minister of Uttarakhand, with just a few more months to go for elections in the hill state.

46-year-old, a legislator representing Khatima constituency, was elected as the leader of BJP legislature party a day after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned. His name was proposed by the outgoing CM at the legislature party meeting in Dehradun on Saturday afternoon.

Dhami, who was born in Tundi village of Pithoragarh on September 16, 1975, is a two-time MLA from Khatima seat. Though he does not have any administrative experience, the young leader from the Kumaon region is known among party workers for his organisational skills.


Dhami was associated with the ABVP student organisation from 1990 to 1999. Later, he became the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

The second change of guard in Uttarakhand came after just four months as Rawat, who is a Lok Sabha MP, did not seem to have a chance of getting elected as MLA in two months to remain in office.

Reports said the Election Commission may not be too keen on holding bypolls with just about six months to go for state elections there.

Soon after being elected, Dhami thanked the party leadership for reposing faith in him and said that he will deal with the challenges lying ahead with everyone's cooperation.
