Pushkar Singh Dhami relieved after BJP wins Haridwar panchayat polls

The Uttarakhand BJP received a shot in the arm as it got its block pramukhs elected in all the seven blocks of Haridwar district in the panchayat elections. Moreover, the new chairman of the district board is also likely to be elected by the BJP camp.

Although panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols, the development comes as a boost to the BJP government which has been under relentless attack from the main opposition Congress over the Ankita Bhandari murder case and the now scrapped assembly recruitments.

Haridwar is considered an especially tough assembly constituency for the BJP. "After the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state, this is for the first time the BJP will politically dominate all the six blocks, besides the district board," said a BJP functionary, who did not wish to be identified.


In the 2022 assembly election, the BJP won only three out of the 11 seats in Haridwar district, while the Congress bagged five seats and the BSP won two seats.
