Punjab HC exempts 'Godman' Rampal from personal appearance
CHANDIGARH: Punjab and High Court today exempted self-styled godman Rampal from personal appearance in a contempt of court case.

A Division Bench of the High Court adjourned the hearing in the case till March 10.

The 'godman' appeared before the High Court and moved an application seeking exemption from personal appearance, saying his counsel will represent him in the next hearing, which the court allowed.

The HC had last year charged Rampal with contempt of court following a clash his supporters had with villagers in the Hissar District Court complex where he was to appear in connection with a 2006 case of clash at his Ashram in Rohtak in which one person was murdered and several others were injured.

Earlier the controversial preacher had failed to appear in the Court after which non-bailable warrants were issued against him.

Apart from the contempt of court, Rampal is facing a number of cases relating to various charges including sedition, arson, rioting, attempt to murder, preventing government servants from performing duty and others.

63-year-old Rampal was arrested on November 19 after a two-week tense stand-off between his supporters and the police after close to 15,000 of his followers were evacuated from the sprawling premises of his Satlok Ashram in Hissar district's Barwala town.
