Pun Assembly concerned over attacks on Indian students in Oz

Punjab Assembly asked the state government to raise the issue of racial attack on Indian students, including Punjabis, in Australia with the Centre.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Assembly on Wednesday asked the state government to raise the issue of racial attack on Indian students, including Punjabis, in Australia with the Centre.

Cutting across the party lines, the members of the Assembly appealed to the Centre to find out an immediate solution to the problem by discussing it with the Government of Australia.

Introducing a resolution to this effect in the House, ruling SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha said "it (racial attacks) is a serious issue concerning the state and if it does not stop immediately the families of the Indian-origin students studying in Austriala would be ruined."

Independent MLA Charanjit Singh Channi said "there is a need to find out the reasons why Indian students prefer to go abroad".

"Our doctors and engineers are keen to go abroad after completing their education. We have failed to provide conducive environment to the youth of the country," he said.

Transport Minister Mohan Lal said "the Prime Minister must take up the issue sincerely. It is the duty of the Centre to ensure safety and security of the Indian students studying abroad."
