Protest at Singur, Mamata stages sit-in

Banerjee rushed here on learning that the company had started making payments to those who lost their land to the project.

SINGUR: Opposition continued to mount against Tata Motors' proposed small car plant here, with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today staging a sit-in protest even as the company started distributing compensation to those who had sold land for the project.
Banerjee, who called for state-wide protests tomorrow, rushed here on learning that the company had started making payments to those who lost their land to the project.
She staged a dharna at the Block Development Office here demanding that distribution of cheques be stopped immediately and said that she would continue her protest overnight.
She also announced that her party would organise road and rail blockades throughout the state tomorrow in protest against handing over of agricultural land for industrial use.
Earlier, members of the 'Krishijami Raksha Committee' (Save Farmland Committee), opposed to the aquisition of agricultural land for the project demonstrated before the block development office and were joined by women wielding broomsticks.
