Prohibitory orders issued in Muzaffarnagar over cane agitation

The orders were issued yesterday allegedly after Bhartiya Kisan Union on Friday threatened to launch an agitation for the low cane prices.

MUZAFFARNAGAR: Prohibitory orders have been issued in Muzaffarnagar district in the view of agitations against low sugarcane prices in the state, police said today.

The orders were issued yesterday allegedly after Bhartiya Kisan Union on Friday threatened to launch an agitation for the low cane prices.

Prohibitory orders have been issued to ensure maintenance of law and order, in view of sugar cane price agitation, Additional District Magistrate Inder Mani Tripathi said.

"Prohibitory orders under section 144 has been issued, prohibiting assembly of more than five people in public place, carrying arms and other weapons in the district since yesterday," Tripathi said.

Earlier, the BKU demanded that the minimum support price of sugarcane should be fixed at Rs 350 per quintal by the government.

The Uttar Pradesh government had recently announced Rs 275 and Rs 280 per quintal as the minimum support price of sugarcane.
