Progress in boundary talks, says Chinese PM
Neighbours agree on formula to resolve dispute as special representatives National Security Advisor MK Narayanan and Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo started the 11th round of negotiations.
No details were revealed on the in-camera negotiations, which have been kept under wraps right from the beginning. Mr Wen also said both Beijing and New Delhi have established the guiding principles and political parameters for resolving the boundary dispute.
India and China are still far away from working out a solution to the border problem with China making claims over Tawang. New Delhi has repeatedly asserted that it will not accept any solution that requires displacement of people. Mr Narayanan held informal talks on Monday evening with Mr Bingguo. China had said last week that it was “willing to join hands with India to find a fair and rational solution”.
Talks are also taking place ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to China later this year. The Communist Party of China on Tuesday said it is attaching “great importance” to Congress president Gandhi’s visit.
“We are confident that the upcoming visit to China by Ms Sonia Gandhi will further enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the leaders of the two countries and also promote the exchanges between the two political parties and strive for the development of our state-to-state relations,” vice-minister of the international department of the CPC central committee Zhang Zhijun told a news agency.
Even though there has been a lull in the border talks, there has been a constant exchange of high levels visits and meetings between India and China.
External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee met Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday. After Mr Hu’s visit in November last year, Mr Hu and Mr Singh met in Berlin on the sidelines of the G-8 summit.
