Program will broaden scrutiny of facilities in India, China

Australia will join the United States and Europe to inspect factories in countries like India and China that are producing pharmaceutical raw materials without enough safety standards.

MELBOURNE: Australia will join the United States and Europe to inspect factories in countries like India and China that are producing pharmaceutical raw materials without enough safety standards.
According to a report, factories in countries like India and China are producing much of the world's pharmaceutical raw materials, but are not always subject to safety inspections.
The US Government on Wednesday announced it will work with Australian and European officials to coordinate their inspections and share information, thereby covering a wider territory and more foreign facilities.
The pilot program will initially focus on makers of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
US Health Secretary Mike Leavitt said facilities will be inspected more often.
"What we are seeing is the maturing of a global market, and we have to invent new tools to deal with a changing environment," Leavitt said.
Two people died in the US and hundreds of others had severe allergic reactions after the blood thinner Heparin was contaminated in a Chinese factory.
