SINGUR : With the dharna sponsored by Trinamool Congress into its eighth day, there were signs of a counter-movement building up as a rally in support of the Tatas' small car project went round villages surrounding the project site on Sunday.

The rally was attended by several hundred people who chanted pro-plant slogans and carried posters backing the project. A public meeting was also held at Beraberi village.

There was a scuffle between the rallyists and Trinammol supporters who were on their way to the dharna manch but it was sorted out quickly before taking an ugly turn.

Meanwhile, the huge factory premises wore a deserted look today, contrasted by the flurry of activities at the dharna manch where the small crowd in the morning swelled into several thousands as the day progressed.

People from many places across south Bengal arrived in trucks and buses.
