'Priyanka's meeting with Nalini shows family's humane nature'
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said Priyanka Vadra's recent meeting with Nalini, who was sentenced to life in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, showed the Gandhi family's 'humane' nature.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said Priyanka Vadra's recent meeting with Nalini, who was sentenced to life in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, showed the Gandhi family's 'humane' nature.
Referring to the duo's meeting last month at the Vellore prison, where Nalini is lodged, as well as Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's earlier initiative to help commute Nalini's death sentence to that of life imprisonment, Karunanidhi said all these only show that the members of the Gandhi family are "humane".
"Sonia pardoned Nalini considering her child's future in the wake of her hanging," he said, while taking part in a debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on a resolution calling for more proactive role by India to arrange peace talks to end the ethnic strife in Sri Lanka.
Sonia made the appeal after Nalini delivered a baby girl in the prison. Her husband, Murugan, is also sentenced to death. Following Sonia's appeal, Nalini's sentence was commuted to life whereas the clemency petitions of Murugan and two others are pending before the President.
On March 19, Priyanka met Nalini in her prison cell. The meeting came to light after a lawyer filed an application under Right to Information Act, seeking details of the meeting.
Reacting to media reports, Priyanka in a statement in New Delhi said "meeting Nalini was my way of coming to peace with violence and loss that I have experienced".
