Prithviraj Chavan slams opposition on FDI in multi-brand retail issue

Prithviraj Chavan slammed opposition to FDI in multi-brand retail saying that the Cong will fight the attempts to scare people about UPA's economic reforms.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today slammed opposition on Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail saying that the Congress will fight the attempts to scare people about UPA's economic reforms.

He batted for FDI saying it was necessary for infrastructure projects, especially in cities like Mumbai as well as poverty eradication and social security programmes.

"Infrastructure projects like the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, metro, airports at Navi Mumbai and Chakan, as well as elevated railway need more than Rs 18,000 crore of funds. Where do we get it from," he said, while addressing party workers here.

Chavan attributed previous opposition to FDI due to the legacy of the British East India Company.

"Can such a thing happen now? It's ridiculous to even speak about such things," he said.

FDI in retail will bring revenue and employment opportunities. "Its a win-win situation," he claimed.
