Bhutan to be first stop in Narendra Modi’s calendar of foreign trip. Delhi has been a steadfast supporter of Bhutan’s development projects, including 2 power plants agreed during its PM’s meeting with Modi on May 27.

Modi’s second trip abroad will be to Japan in July. It was earlier speculated that Japan could be destination of his maiden bilateral standalone trip abroad. Tokyo was pushing for this. Modi could visit Tokyo en route to Brazil for BRICS Summit. Modi is an admirer of Japan and shares excellent personal chemistry with Shinzo Abe.

US will be third destination. This trip for a summit meeting with President Barack Obama will coincide with Modi’s visit to New York for UN General Assembly. The ice was broken when former envoy Nancy Powell met Modi. This Obama-Modi trip will start process of repairing ties.

Modi’s first attendance at multilateral meet will be Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa summit in Brazil in July. This will give him an opportunity to meet presidents of Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa on the sidelines separately. The meetings with Russian and Chinese presidents will be key to drive Modi’s economic diplomacy.

The PM has a tight schedule in November. The G-20 summit is lined up in Brisbane, Australia, on Nov 15-16; Saarc summit in Kathmandu in November; the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN India summit in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Russian and Chinese presidents are also expected to travel to India later this year.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi will arrive on Sunday for bilateral talks and will handover invite for visit by an Indian leader for Panchsheel celebrations in June in China.

Russian deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin is expected to be in Delhi for talks on June 18 with ministers and offi cials in the new dispensation.
