Prime minister announces package for violence affected Assam

The prime minister has assured that a probe will be instituted into the violence which has killed around 53 people.

GUWAHATI: Prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday announced Rs 300 Crore package for trouble torn Bodoland area in Assam. The prime minister has assured that a probe will be instituted into the violence which has killed around 53 people.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram along with Union Home Secretary RK Singh will visit Assam on Monday.

Dr Singh visited Kokrajhar to take stock of the trouble torn situation.

He assured that probe will be conducted in the series of violence which has killed around 53 people. "Inquiry would be conducted into the causes of the violence that had affected hundreds of thousands of people and punishment would be handed out to anyone found guilty of instigating it".

Describing the conflict as "unacceptable" and a "blot on the nation".

"This conflict is unacceptable and must come to an end. We must do everything possible to bring relief to those who have been displaced."
