Price rise to affect Congress in coming polls: CPM
Observing that the UPA government was "mesmerised" by its own talk of nine per cent GDP growth, the CPI(M) on Friday said the issue of price rise would adversely affect Congress' fortunes in the ongoing assembly elections.
"The die hard neo-liberal policy makers in the UPA government will have to come to grips with reality soon", party Political Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said.
Demanding that futures trading in essential commodities should be banned immediately, he said the ad valorem duty structure on petro-products should be revised and urgent steps be taken to boost food grain production and ensuring adequate procurement to check galloping inflation.
Immediate measures were also required to strengthen and expand PDS, tighten the Essential Commodities Act and crackdown on hoarding, Yechury said in an editorial in the forthcoming issue of 'People's Democracy'.
"Mesmerised by its own talk of having achieved nine per cent growth in GDP, the UPA government is now facing the anger and discontent of the people due to price rise", he said adding that the issue was "going to have an adverse effect on the fortunes of the Congress party in the Punjab and Uttarakhand elections".
