Prevent shut down of Nokia's Chennai plant: CPI(M) to Tamil Nadu Government
CHENNAI: Strongly opposing handset manufacturer Nokia's decision to shut down its plant near here, CPI (M) today sought the Tamil Nadu Government's intervention in the matter to protect the employees.

"The decision to shutdown the plant was illegal and Tamil Nadu Government should take all steps to prevent the shutdown and safeguard the interest of the the workers," party state unit Secretary G Rmakarishnan said in a statement here.

He noted that despite having enjoyed sops from the Central and state governments such as land at low rate and uninterrupted power supply, the company "had not even paid the income tax".

Nokia had announced yesterday that it will shut down its plant located at Sriperumbudur near here from November one as Microsoft had terminated mobile purchase agreement from the factory and that it was left with no business.
