The event was attended by politicians from nearly 25 parties, diplomats, bureaucrats, judges of the Supreme Court among others. It was boycotted by 20 Opposition parties. Murmu said the architects of our Constitution had imagined a nation that would be characterised by the legislative principles expounded by members elected democratically.
Dhankhar described Parliament as the “north star” of democracy and hoped that the new building would help in ‘creating a political consensus and serve as a symbol of freedom from the mindset of slavery’.
Speaker Om Birla thanked the PM for “inspirational guidance which ensured that the new Parliament building was completed in less than two and a half years”. He also paid tributes to labourers for remarkable dedication towards their duty even at the height of Covid-19 pandemic.
While entering the Lok Sabha chamber to deliver a speech, the PM interacted with justice BV Nagarathna and justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul. Earlier, the PM performed ‘Ganapati Homam’ along with Birla amid chanting of mantras by priests from Karnataka’s Sringeri Math. Thereafter, he prostrated before the Sengol and sought blessings from the priests of various Tamil Nadu adheenams. He then carried the Sengol in a procession amid tunes of nadaswaram and chanting of mantras to the new building and installed it in a special enclosure on the right side of the Speaker’s chair.
