Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee returns to Congress

Former late President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee's "ghar wapsi" to Congress was done today. The rejoining of Abhijit Mukherjee, a former Congress MP, is witnessed by political experts as a teaser to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who recently said she did not need the Congress to defeat the BJP in the state.

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that she will win two third majority in 2026 assembly polls and she will go alone in the coming assembly polls.

Abhijit Mukherjee had joined Trinamool in 2021. He is not considered a leader with a pan-state influence, his return to the grand old party will carry a symbolic message and boost the Congress' morale to regain lost ground in West Bengal as he represents former President Pranab Mukherjee's legacy, who was a Congress veteran.


The homecoming of the ex-president’s son was conducted in the presence of present State President Subhankar Sarkar.
Abhijit Mukherjee's joiinng comes days after his sister Sharmishtha Mukherjee questioned Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit abroad soon after the passing away of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 26, 2024.

Notably, the Congress and Left parties fought together in the 2021 assembly elections together but could not win even a single seat in the 294-member House. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections Banerjee did not enter into a seat-sharing deal with the Congress, despite being part of INDIa Bloc, Congress won only one of the 42 parliamentary seats in the state.
