Early Life
Pranab Mukherjee worked as upper-division Clerk in the Office of Deputy Accountant-General (Post and Telegraph) in Calcutta. In 1963, he became a lecturer(Assistant Professor) of Political Science at Vidyasagar College, Kolkata.

He became a member of Rajya Sabha (the upper house of Indian parliament) in July 1969 on a Bangla Congress ticket. Indira Gandhi, recognised Mukherjee's talents and recruited him to her party, the Indian National Congress.
