Pragya Thakur tenders apology in Lok Sabha for her remarks on Nathuram Godse

NEW DELHI: BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur on Friday apologised twice in the Lok Sabha for her recent remarks purportedly on Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. Her second apology came after Opposition parties rejected her first, amid high-voltage protests and drama.

Thakur followed up her apology by filing a notice for breach of privilege against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for calling her a “terrorist” in a tweet.

“On November 27, during a discussion on the Special Protection Group Amendment Bill, 2019, I did not call Nathuram Godse a patriot. I did not even mention his name.


I apologise again if I have hurt any sentiments,” Thakur told the Lok Sabha on Friday, following a meeting of senior leaders called by the Speaker after House proceedings were stalled by Opposition protest till lunch break.

Her first apology earlier in the day only triggered another round of protest when she indirectly targeted Rahul Gandhi who had called her a ‘terrorist’ in his tweet on Tuesday.

Reacting to Thakur’s notice, Gandhi said outside the House, “let them do it. I have made my stand clear.” Gandhi told reporters, “what Pragya Thakur says is what she believes in.

I don’t agree with her, but she believes in it.” He alleged that Godse believes in violence.
