PR a noble profession today: Kamat

Public relations is a noble profession like journalism and is meant to educate amd enlighten the masses.

MANIPAL: Public relations, unlike in the past commands respect today as a noble profession like journalism and is meant not just to sell concept or an idea, but to educate, enlighten and empower the masses, renowned journalist and chairman of Prasar Bharathi, Dr M V Kamat said here on Saturday.

In his key-note address at the inauguration of Manipal chapter of Public Relation Council of India" (PRCI) here, he said that PR was a hard concept to define in precise terms. It was part of the longer theme of communications between individuals and institutions with the public at large.

Dr Kamat termed Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi as India's 'two great PR experts'. Swami Vivekananda, without saying a word about Hindusim at the conference on world religions at Chicago, had effectively conveyed the catholicity of all-encompassing religions to the American multitude, which was the beginning of the Ramakrishna Mission.

On the other hand, Gandhi's Dandi March was an equally unpremeditated event which shook the foundations of British empire in India for the first time, he said.

"This poorly clad man engaging himself in the most insignificant posture, as seen in pictures, did more to hasten Independence than anything else in the long history of the fight for Swaraj, that included non-co-operation," he said adding that this had remained one of the nodal points of in Indian history.

Dr H S Balla, pro vice-chancellor of Manipal University who presided, announced that a diploma course in Public Relations would commence at the Manipal Institute of Communication from the next academic year.
