Powerful quake jolts Japan

A powerful earthquake hit northern Japan Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The 6.0 magnitude quake took place at 6.24 p.m.

TOKYO: A powerful earthquake hit northern Japan Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The 6.0 magnitude quake took place at 6.24 p.m., with the epicenter about 40 km under the sea off Iwate prefecture.

No tsunami warning has been issued and there was no immediate report of deaths or injuries. The agency said the quake was most strongly felt in the southeastern part of Aomori prefecture.

The quake was also felt in Iwate's neighbouring prefectures of Miyagi, Tochigi and Yamagata.
