Poriborton claims Mamata, upheaval claims Stalin: Assembly results deal blows to ruling giants

New Delhi: The five state assembly elections witnessed major upheavals, with some big names tumbling. They included two chief ministers-Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin. In West Bengal, Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur assembly seat by 15,105 votes to the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.

In Tamil Nadu, Stalin lost his Kolathur seat, which he had won thrice since 2011, to the TVK's VS Babu by 8,795 votes. These were the biggest setbacks for Trinamool and DMK with CMs losing their seats.

In Assam, deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat assembly seat by 23,182 votes to the BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami. This was a blow for Gogoi, who'd won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2024 by a margin of 144,000 votes. In Tamil Nadu, Union minister and BJP candidate L Murugan lost the Avanashi assembly contest to the TVK's Kamali S by a margin of 15,373 votes.

Former Telangana governor and BJP leader Tamilsai Soundarajan finished third in Mylapore, which was won by TVK candidate Venkataraman P, with the DMK second.

In West Bengal, prominent Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury lost the Baharampur assembly seat to Subrata Maitra of the BJP by 17,548 votes. Prominent leader Mausam Noor, who joined Congress from Trinamool Congress, lost the Malatipur assembly seat to the TMC's Abdur Rahim Boxi by 59,747 votes.

In Kerala, state minister and senior CPI(M) leader V Sivankutty lost the Nemom seat to BJP state president Rajeev Chandrashekhar by 4,978 votes. Another prominent CPI(M) leader and former state minister, KK Shailaja, lost the Peravoor seat to sitting MLA and state Congress president Sunny Joseph by 14,453 votes.
