MUMBAI: Premier lounges, bars and restaurants expect a sharp fall in business following the terrorist attack in Mumbai. Most of these joints in south Mumbai reopened on Sunday morning after being shut for two days.

Bar managers and restaurant owners say the terrorist attacks have raised worries over poor business volumes during the forthcoming festive season in December. It is felt people are now afraid to venture out late in the day and prefer weekend tourist destinations to pubs or restaurants.

The famous Delhi Darbar in Colaba is already feeling the heat. Here 60% of our customers are foreigners. Its a major setback for us. Our restaurant was shut for three days. We cant quantify our loss, but this incident might cause a major dip is sales, said Delhi Darbars general manager Masood Mansuri. Joe Sequeira, assistant general manager of Mars which owns the famous pub Jazz By The Bay said, Jazz By The Bay was open but there were almost no footfalls.

Clearly, revenue has fallen in these three days. Nearly 60% of our customers are foreigners. Other up-market restaurants like Cafe Basilico Bistro and Deli resumed operations on Saturday but recorded a drop in footfalls. Maybe the best way to instil confidence among patrons is to resume regular operations soon, said Vijay Prakash, manager of the popular south Mumbai restaurant Indigo.

Bars and restaurants are adopting a wait-and-watch approach since a lot would depend on the travel advisory policies of companies for their foreign customers. Uday P Chebbi, front office manager at The Ambassador, said: In the last three days, sales fell by 25%. We are, however, optimistic about numbers picking up soon. Pubs, bars and restaurants in south Mumbai are now strict about security and cautious about the customers coming in.

Shashikalathil, CEO of Galaxy Entertainment which runs the popular Sports Bar said, There will be a degree of normalcy from Monday. Our suburban outlet in Malad was open and did not see much impact on business due to the number of IT, BPO professionals there.
