Political poles come together to cheer Madani
AS Peoples’ Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Madani got ready to leave his cell in Coimbatore after a nine-year stint behind bars, two cheers were raised for him in Kerala, with the Left and Congress leaders hailing the acquittal.
The ruling Left Democratic Front and the opposition United Democratic Front in the state, who seldom see eye to eye, were unanimous in raising a toast to the court verdict, and virtually vied in singing his praises. In stark contrast, BJP leaders in the state including former Union minister O Rajagopal reacted cautiously to the verdict and opined that the administration had failed to prove the charges against Madani.
Meanwhile, Madani also got bail in another case in Oachira in Kerala making his proposed travel to Kerala on Thursday a smooth affair. Madani is expected to take a flight from Coimbatore to Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday afternoon.
PDP leader Poonthura Siraj said Madani would meet the media at the state capital and then attend a public meeting planned to be held at Shankumugham in the city. From the statements of the political leaders in the state, Madani can expect a red carpet welcome when he arrives here.
State home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the state government would ensure security for Madani, while health minister P K Sreemathi said the government would bear the PDP leader’s medical expenses.
Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said Madani had actually not got justice, considering his imprisonment, while KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala expressed relief that he had finally been delivered justice.
